Doctor Howard S. Kaufman

Doctor Howard S. Kaufman earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, completed his fellowship and surgical training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and was an Associate Professor of Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He was recruited to USC in 2002 to lead the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery and became the Chief of General Surgery at the USC University Hospital and Vice Chairman for Patient Safety and Quality for the Department of Surgery across four USC-affiliated hospitals. Dr. Kaufman currently practices at Huntington Colorectal Surgeons in Pasadena and has served as Chief of General Surgery and the Chair of Surgery at Huntington Hospital.

Dr. Kaufman is a Clinical Professor and Clinical Director of the Colorectal Research Program at the Huntington Medical Research Institutes and was one of the early pioneers of minimally invasive surgery for Crohn’s disease and the first surgeon on the west coast to perform colon resections laparoscopically through a single incision. Dr. Kaufman also developed multidisciplinary pelvic floor programs on both coasts and demonstrated how advanced pelvic imaging influences surgical treatment decisions. He has passionately pursued efforts to reduce the effects of surgical trauma on his patients throughout his career.

Dr. Kaufman’s research efforts have paralleled his clinical interests and expertise. He has published 67 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 18 book chapters, and has presented his work at major meetings both domestically and abroad. He is a member of several national surgical societies and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Kaufman currently serves as the State Chair representing Southern California to the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
